Risk Assessment of the Thyroid Cancer within the Problem of Radiation Protection for the Reactor Accidents
نویسندگان
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Nuclear power reactors have a large inventory of radioiodine among other radionuclides. In the event of an accident in an operating NPP involving a release of radioactivity, the iodine isotopes will be among the first fission products to be released. Radioiodine isotopes cumulate in the thyroid gland. Therefore protection of the thyroid is one of the most important issues of emergency response at the early stage of the reactor accident. Based on Chernobyl experience and latest data the protection strategy is now under reconsideration. Results of risk assessment, which were developed in Belarus, could significantly contribute to this process.

Estimation of the thyroid secondary cancer risk on the patient of standard breast external beam radiotherapy
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to estimate the secondary cancer risk of thyroid for standard radiotherapy methods which are commonly used for breast cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four breast cancer patients (their age range was around 50 years old) who referred to Seyed- Al- Shohada hospital (Isfahan, Iran) were included in this ...
متن کاملNuclear Radiation and Thyroid Cancer; A Systematic Review
Background: The increasing prevalence of thyroid cancer among the survivors of atomic bomb attacks in Japan, nuclear fallout in the Marshall Islands, and Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident indicate a strong relationship between nuclear radiation and the occurrence of thyroid cancer. Materials and Methods: Systematic researches were conducted in the medical database of the American National ...
متن کاملEffective dose and thyroid cancer risk in panoramic imaging
Background and Aim: On panoramic radiographs, sensitive organs, including the thyroid, are exposed to radiation. Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers in Iran. That is why, in this study the effective dose and risk of thyroid cancer were estimated on panoramic radiography. Materials and Methods: Seventy GR200 thermoluminescence (TLD) dosimeters were used to estimate the absorbed dos...
متن کاملAssessment of lung cancer risk due to indoor radon exposure in inhabitants of the state of Azad Kashmir Pakistan
Background: Several epidemiological studies conducted on underground miner’s show that exposure to elevated levels of radioactive radon gas is expected to increase the risk of lung cancer. Relative risk of lung cancer is almost linear with radon exposure. Elevated concentrations of radon are not only reported within mines but also for closed indoor environment of general public houses....
متن کاملPatient-Specific Radiation Dose and Cancer Risk in Computed Tomography Examinations in Ondo, Nigeria
Introduction: The dose in computed tomography (CT) often approach or exceed the optimum levels, thereby increasing the probability of cancer induction. With wide application of this diagnostic test, it is expedient to determine the effective dose (ED) for each patient to estimate their cancer risk. This study was conducted to investigate the patient-specific dose (PSD) and cancer risk in CT exa...
